Difference Between Diploma Programs and Certificate Courses

Certificate courses take less than 20 clock hours to complete and are designed to provide training on a specific skill. Certificate courses consist of a single course that will help you develop career competency in a single subject.

Diploma programs offer a more in-depth curriculum than a certificate and will usually take months to complete. Diploma programs consist of a multiple courses that will help you develop career competency in a subject matter. Diplomas are often offered in a vocational or career college setting and are usually an alternative to an associate or bachelor’s degree.

Both certificates and diplomas are career-focused short to medium length courses and programs. We are all familiar with high school diplomas, which have a specific set of general education requirements. Career-focused diploma programs would not have much, if any, requirement for general education. These types of diplomas concentrate on getting students ready to perform a job.
